E-bikes are classified by several factors.
Class I
E-bikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
Class II
E-bikes that also have a maximum speed of 20 mph, but are throttle-assisted.
Class III
E-bikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.
Class IV
E-bikes with “Open” or “unlimited” throttles, no top speed limit, and motor power beyond 750 Watts (often well beyond).
