Ghost E-RIOT AM Review: Takeaway

The Ghost E-RIOT AM series of e-bikes are made for mountain biking enthusiasts who want an e-bike that can handle any adventure that comes its way. The model’s full suspension keeps your wheels safely glued to the ground while allowing you to maneuver the steepest of ascents and descents with ease.

The E-RIOT AM e-bike series isn’t for the faint-hearted. It’s most suited to those with intermediate to advanced mountain e-biking experience. With its powerful Bosch PowerTube 750 Wh battery and an estimated range of up to 86 miles, the Ghost E-RIOT AM will have you enjoying the great outdoors for longer, whether you opt for the Full Party, Essential, or Advanced model.

E-Bike Summary

The Ghost E-RIOT AM e-bike lineup features a powerful Bosch Performance CX (GEN4) motor to provide powerful acceleration and intuitive handling — all within a compact system.

The brand’s unique SuperFit geometry ensures your hips, knees, and feet are ideally positioned to maximize power transmission while you cycle. This results in superior bike control, fatigue-free riding, and more effective pedaling.

The E-RIOT AM e-bikes also come equipped with an LED display and remote that form the control center of the Bosch Smart System. This allows you to individually configure the interaction of your e-bike’s motor, battery, and display for ultimate customization.

The use of carbon within the Advanced and Full Party models’ frames significantly reduces the e-bike’s weight, allowing for easier handling.

Reasons to Buy

Tech-savvy e-bike riders will love how Ghost has gone above and beyond with the E-RIOT AM’s technology. The Bosch Smart System is an innovative addition to an electric mountain bike, while integration with the Bosch E-bike Flow app lets you analyze your tour data, keep on top of your service appointments, view navigation, and more.

The Bosch Performance CX (Gen4) motor and Bosch PowerTube 750 Wh battery combine to give riders a superior mountain e-bike that’s worth every dollar. The result is impressive acceleration, intuitive handling, and maximum agility — not to mention a huge range.

The Ghost E-RIOT AM range comes in three distinct e-bike styles: Full Party, Essential, and Advanced. This gives riders more control over their e-bike frame, color, brakes, and more.

Things to Consider

With a price of up to approximately $6,350 USD, the E-RIOT AM range doesn’t come cheap. These e-bikes do offer great value for money, however, so they’re a worthwhile investment for mountain biking enthusiasts. Those who are looking for an entry-level and budget-friendly mountain e-bike may wish to consider one from a more affordable brand (like SONDORS or Pedego, for example).

Ratings

Power
4.5/5
4.5

A Bosch Performance CX mid-drive chucks out an immense 85 Newton meters of torque or 300% of the wattage you put into the pedals. This transmits power through a 12-speed, Sram 11-50t cassette that offers a great choice of ratios for climbs uphill and down. You’ll find yourself going up even the steepest hills like a boss, and at full tilt downhill, you’ll rapidly hit the cut-out 15.6 mph speed.

The E-RIOT AM comes with a 2.5” Maxxis Minion DHF front tire for maneuverability and a 2.6” Maxxis Minion DHR back tire for grip — the weapons of choice for many top-end eMTBs.

The Bosch 750 Wh in-tube battery offers a full day’s trail riding without letting you down. Even with mixed use of power settings, 85-90 miles is feasible on a cross-country ride. You may do 30 miles of climbs at full power and use near-zero battery on the descents.

Terrain, substrate, and weather conditions will impact the range. Rider weight is also a factor — if you’re going cross country with lots of gear, water, and food, you’ll get less out of the battery than in a trail park with your heavy stuff left at a base.

This dual-suspension eMTB has 160mm travel front and rear shocks made by Rock Shox, enabling you to take on even hardcore jumps without much of a problem. You’ll be in a trekking position — ideal for shifting your weight about in turns, climbs, and jumps. During climbs, the remote-controlled dropper post will come in handy for shifting your weight forward.

Comfort and grip also come from the Maxxis Minion tires which are ideal for mud and loose surfaces. The 29″ wheels can roll over many of the worst lumps and bumps.

Durability
4.5/5

While mid-drive motors have a more analog-riding style than rear-hub motors, there is more to look after. Monitor chain stretch regularly — this usually needs changing every 750 miles or so, as does the cassette. Brake pads and front and rear shocks also need monitoring, especially if you’ve been in mud or dirty water. Finally, the hydraulic cables require occasional service.

Ghost offers a five-year warranty on the parts that it makes such as the frame, but the motor, forks, wheels, and shocks are subject to third-party manufacturers’ warranties.

Style

A hardcore trail-riding monster, the E-Riot AM looks like a mean machine that would put a smile on even a pro’s face. The rear sub-frame is quite small, but that’s a question of aesthetics as much as the rideability of the machine. With the 29er wheels, this is an electric mountain bike designed to conquer the worst of the terrain you can throw at it.
