Himiway Cobra Review: Takeaway

A class-leading affordable overlanding and hunting electric bike, the Himiway Cobra is agile, fast, powerful, and fun to ride. Thanks to its 960 Wh battery, it offers a great range that can allow a ride deep into the backwoods over a day or two of exploring.

Ideal for...

Hunting off grid
Wilderness camping
RVing, if you have the storage
Overlanding in deep woods
Off-road touring

Himiway Cobra Overview

Himiway’s first foray into dual-suspension electric bikes, the Cobra has been a big success and disrupts the affordable overlanding e-bike market. Though this e-bike uses affordable components, they work well together to make a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

It’ll accelerate quickly to 20 mph on throttle due to its newly designed, 750W rear hub motor that chucks out as much as 86 Nm of torque. On pedal assist, it can take you up to 25 mph, and thanks to the new torque sensor at the pedals, it responds far more quickly than Himiway’s previous machines. This gives a much more natural feel.

Range is a big selling point with the Cobra, too — in a real-world ride, you can comfortably expect 40 miles in big terrain. With the 400 lbs of potential payload, that could mean you can cycle to a hide several miles from the road and expect to be able to return with your quarry.

The suspension makes it a little soft to ride on the road, but take it onto a fire road or mountain track, and the bike comes into its element. The lower-cost suspension may bottom out if you push things too hard, but overall, it rides like a much more expensive machine when you pedal hard.

Reasons to Buy

This is a class-leading overlanding, hunting, or off-roading electric bike. The components work together in concert to make a comfortable, nimble e-bike that can really let loose should you want it to. That could be a big muddy hill or flying along a forest road.

We love the potential payload the bike is capable of carrying. At 400 lbs, this is considerably better than its rivals and makes it excellent for hunting or wilderness camping.

Things to Consider

With a 32-inch frame height and a very long wheelbase compared to rivals in this segment, the Cobra is not suited for smaller riders. If you’re 5’6” or taller, it’ll forgive you, but much shorter, and it’ll feel a bit too big for you.

If your budget extends to $4,000 or more, there may be an e-bike that’ll compete in terms of performance, but certainly not at this price of $2,399.

Ratings

Power

The 750W motor has high torque of up to 86 Nm. This means it accelerates quickly and will take you (on pedal assist) to 25 mph. On the road, the fat tires don’t impede acceleration and maintain high speeds. This is, however, better as an off-road beast where the high torque will flatten out even the ugliest of inclines.

Range
4.5/5
4.5

The Cobra is heavy at 88 lbs, and with an average rider of around 220 lbs, this will impact real-world range. Himiway claims it’ll do 80 miles, but in real-world off-road riding with an average person on it, 40 is realistic. That’s still a very good trip into the wilderness.

Comfort
4.5/5

The well-designed dual suspension system allows for great handling off-road. Paired wiith the fat tires, you can push this bike quite hard. Though the Cobra won’t excel at singletrack or downhill/enduro riding, it’s the affordable king of the hill when it comes to overlanding and cross-country riding.

As with all overlanding e-bikes, you’ll be sat in a trekking position and will be using your arms and body to help maneuver the bike. Without the fitness from regular riding, you’ll feel it after some miles.

Durability
3/5
3

Few of the components are high-quality brand names to save on overall cost. Though the Cobra will take a fair bit of abuse, if not well maintained and serviced, you may well end up replacing it after only 3-4 years.

If you ride with pedal assist, you’ll need to replace the chain and brake pads every 1,000 or so miles. Himiway offers a two-year limited warranty on all its frames, batteries, and components, subject to fair wear and tear.

Style

With its fake-carbon black color scheme, the Himiway Cobra is a great-looking fat tire electric bike. Its four-bar dual suspension makes it look like it’ll handle anything you throw at it, and its long wheelbase and fat tires give it a big presence. We also love the camo color-way. It’s a great look for those wilderness lovers.
