Cowboy 4 ST Review: Takeaway

Very much an e-bike to see and be seen on, the Cowboy 4 ST is beautiful and has great tech. Requiring very little maintenance thanks to its belt drive, this machine won’t let you down even after thousands of miles.

Scratch the surface, however, and it could be improved in a few ways, from a bigger battery to a motor offering Class 3, 28 mph speeds.

Ideal for...

Getting to a networking event
Riding to work
Riding to the best boutiques and cafes locally
Seeing friends and acquaintances
Being seen

E-Bike Overview

A direct rival to Netherlands-based VanMoof e-bikes in nearly every way, the Cowboy 4 ST is an undoubtedly beautiful e-bike to look at. Riding it will catch some envious looks as its extremely modern appearance is a statement in its own right.

This bike does more than just look the part, with numerous high-tech features. For example, it has smartphone controls that let you manage the bike’s riding — all while your phone charges wirelessly.

Belt-driven instead of chain-driven, the Cowboy 4 ST is extremely low maintenance, too. Where you’d change the chain every 1,000 miles or so on most e-bikes, the carbon belt on this e-bike will hardly ever need to be changed.

Riding in an upright position, you’ll be comfortable for every one of the 43.5 miles it will reach in range. This is a hyper-modern electric bike in every way.

Reasons to Buy

If you’re the sort where looks are a big part of what you do, look no further than the Cowboy 4 ST. It’s a prizewinner in appearance, from its color scheme to its fine lines.

The tech on board includes GPS-tag-enabled theft protection, auto locking and unlocking, and an ultramodern carbon belt drive system. It also has an auto-lock system that prevents it from operating when your smartphone isn’t in place.

We recommend you add the optional rack. That’ll make this a complete city e-bike by allowing you to carry your top-end laptop to your networking events and workplace.

Things to Consider

Many of the best electric bikes have a mid-drive motor. Cowboy e-bikes have rear-hub motors. This reduces weight but also impacts the natural feel of the ride. Also, the battery sits in the seatpost (not downtube) and may impact the bike’s center of gravity compared to other e-bikes of this technological specification.

Ratings

Power
4/5
4

An electric bike like this would be better if there was a bigger battery and a Class 3 option so it could be ridden up to 28 mph. It’s a Class 1, pedal-assist e-bike, so you’ll pedal everywhere without a throttle.

The ride control system is intuitive and has the feel of a top-end automatic car gearbox as it moves between power settings.

Range
4/5
4

Not designed for trekking tours or long-distance commutes, the Cowboy 4 ST nonetheless offers a relatively decent 43.5 miles of range. Lacking any gearbox or gears, it relies solely on electric power to handle uphill and down. This will impact the range — perhaps riding between campuses in hilly Northern California, you may notice the impact on available range.

Comfort
4.5/5
4.5

Built so one size fits everyone between 5’3” and 6’2”, the Cowboy 4 ST might not be the most comfortable for people on the ends of that spectrum. This drops the score a half point from a perfect 5.

You’ll be sat in an upright, classic position and will be very comfortable riding mile after mile. It’s a relatively lightweight e-bike at just under 42 lbs, meaning that less of your energy will be spent on pushing the bike itself.

Lacking a crossbar, this electric bike is convenient for those with lower mobility or who are wearing a dress.

Durability
4.5/5
4.5

This scores 4.5 for durability and low maintenance. The carbon belt drive will not require replacement for thousands of miles. Lacking a gear cassette, the e-bike will only really need to be checked once a year in a light service by your local bike shop.

Cowboy only offers a two-year warranty on its e-bikes, a limitation that falls short of many of its rivals in this space.

Style
5/5
5

Designed for those who like to be technologically up-to-date, the Cowboy 4 ST is a jaw-dropping beauty of an electric bike. If you’re the type of person who likes having the latest fruit-branded smartphone and tablet (or its Korean rival), then this is the ideal e-bike for you.

The muted but modern color schemes and fine proportions go together to make a bike that’ll be the talk of your network.
