Ghost E-Square Travel U Review: Takeaway

The 2021 Ghost Ebikes E Square Travel U is an ideal e-bike for commuting and shopping trips. With rigid forks, it’s a lighter machine than other hybrid e-bikes and can handle better.

Ideal for...

Comfort
Longer rides
Commuting to work
Urban e-bike riding
In-city car replacement for errands and shopping

E-Bike Overview

Thanks to the mudguards and lights, this e-bike is great for cycling when it gets dark or stormy. The panniers and maximum payload of 120 kilograms (264.5 pounds) allow you to carry a couple of days’ groceries or all you need for a day in the office.

We like the in-tube battery and smooth power delivery from the Bosch Performance motor that allows good acceleration as required. Thanks to the crank motor, the response to pressure on the pedal is near-instant, making for a great riding feel.

Reasons to Buy

As a mid-range commuter and urban e-bike, the Ghost Ebikes E Square Travel U road e-bike is best used as a car replacement. This can carry up to 40 pounds of cargo on the pannier with the average rider weight of around 200 pounds — more than enough for a big shopping trip.

Thanks to the headlight and taillight meeting German regulations, the e-bike is safe for riding after dark with good visibility at the front and rear. With the full mudguards, the machine will keep the dirt off you as you ride in foul weather, too.

Things to Consider

We don’t like the lack of suspension on the forks. Not all riding is on roads, and the lack of suspension here limits where you can go. At most, you could handle an inner city bike path — not a byway or country track. If you do go off-road, your arms take the strain of the bumps on the track.

The price of 2,999 euros might also be a bit high for those just entering the e-bike arena.

Ratings

Power
3.5/5
3.5

The Bosch Performance, 250-watt mid-drive motor can offer a comfortable level of torque and should enable you to ride up even quite steep hills on a regular basis without much effort.

The rigid forks mean more power is transmitted to the road without being lost through suspension, though a lot will be lost through friction thanks to the large, wide tires. Finally, weight is a bit of an issue. At 55 lbs, this bike sees a loss of efficiency as a whole.

Range
4/5
4

At 500-watt-hours, the battery on this e-bike was the largest available only a couple of years ago. We have given it a lower score, as the largest batteries now are a quarter more powerful (625Wh), and there is no range extender option. That said, a 45-mile ride every day is quite some distance on a bike, and as such, this is no weakling as range goes.

Comfort
4/5
4

The E Square Travel U sits between a full trekking position and that of a city bike for comfortable riding over longer distances. However, it lacks a front suspension and has a rigid fork. This would make your arms tired if you do any off-road riding and come off smooth surfaces. However, many of the bumps in the road will be absorbed by the mountain bike-style 2.4” wide tires on 27.5” wheels. Comfort also comes from the Selle Italia saddle.

If you’re using it exclusively as an urban/road bike, however, you shouldn’t have much of a problem.

Durability
5/5
5

This is a bike that, with regular maintenance and annual servicing, should give you many years of use. Bosch motors will do thousands of miles with no maintenance, and the pedal drivetrain will require a little oil every other ride.

Do be aware that chains need replacing every 500 miles or so and monitoring for stretch. The brake pads are easy to switch and should last 500-700 miles of hard use. This comes with every chain-driven bike with cassette gears and hydraulic brakes.

Style
4.5/5
4.5

We like the look of this machine. It’s modern and will cut a dash through the crowd. With its shapely frame and colors, this is a bike that shouts quality and style without putting style before substance. If you want a good-looking electric bike that does as it suggests, you won’t go wrong in choosing this!
