Made by one of France’s road racing giants, the LOOK E-765 Optimum is an all-out racing bike with a frictionless, 250W Fazua Evation mid-drive motor. Ideal for training and club riding, this is a fun bike to ride for the serious road rider. It offers just enough extra push as you work up to your full competition form.

E-Bike Overview

Following in the footsteps of this premium road racing brand’s traditional bikes, the E-765 Optimum is ultra-lightweight. In fact, without the weight of the battery and the motor, this bike would be a competitive road bike.

With a carbon frame and components, the E-765 Optimum comes in two models varying $500 in price. The E-765 Optimum Proteam comes with an electronic Shimano Ultegra gear system, while the slightly cheaper E-765 Optimum has a cable-operated transmission.

Core to the proposition of this very lightweight e-road bike is the Fazua Evation mid-drive motor. Unique among mid-drives, it offers zero friction when not engaged and provides the natural riding feel not seen in e-bikes with rear-hub motors. This lets you choose which inclines to get support on. The Fazua motor and battery can be taken out with a few clicks too, to make the E-765 Optimum a pure road bike.

Reasons to Buy

Weighing in at just 29.7 pounds with battery and motor, this is a featherweight electric bike that has a riding feel very similar to a carbon traditional bike. Lacking anything in the way of suspension, the frame and fork’s flexibility compensate, providing comfort even after a 100-mile day in the saddle.

LOOK is one of France’s high-ranking road bike brands, in a country that ionizes road racing. Its machines are regularly ridden by Grand Tour winners and Olympic champions. The LOOK E-765 Optimum is designed and built with this depth of experience, and it’s meant for those who take road racing/club riding very seriously. It’s the perfect trainer bike if you’re getting back up to speed after taking a break from competitions.

Things to Consider

The E-765 Optimum is not a fully powered electric bike. There are others on the market with larger batteries and motors that’ll do a lot of the riding for you. The motor is just here for occasional use, and it’s not meant to provide great range from the battery. These issues make it what it is — an extremely light, performance road bike with just the kick you need on those moments when you don’t want to/can’t push as hard as you might need to.

Ratings

Power
3/5
3

The low power rating we give this e-bike is not due to the quality. It’s deliberately small to reduce the weight of the machine. The 55 Nm of torque offered by the 250W mid-drive motor will still give a great kick on a steep incline, but compared to full-electric bikes out there, this isn’t huge. Those e-bikes in question will be much heavier.

Range
3/5
3

You’ll expect to ride a lot of your miles without power, and as with the lightweight motor, battery capacity is sacrificed deliberately for weight in this case. One of the lightest electric bikes in its class, the E-765 Optimum shouldn’t meet most riders’ range requirements if they don’t have the legs for 10+ miles without support.

Comfort
5/5
5

Built by a top European Grand Tour racing brand, the E-765 Optimum has geometry ideal for long days in the saddle. Those new to such a machine might feel unused to the seating position, that, while not 100% aero, is certainly tucked. The carbon seatpost on the Proteam version might be slightly more comfortable than the alloy seatpost, but only slightly so. Still, for a racing bike, this is top-of-the-line when it comes to comfort.

Durability
5/5
5

As can be expected from a premium cycling brand like LOOK, you’ll likely be using this machine for many years. Maintenance is best done by a professional who understands the complex gear system as well as hydraulic brakes. The chain may need to be switched out every 1,000 miles or so, as with the disc brake pads.

Style
5/5
5

The French know a bit about making a beautiful bike! When it comes to the E-765 Optimum, the added bonus is that its downtube is so narrow, you may not immediately think it’s an e-bike. With the great Mondrian-inspired color schemes, this e-bike is as much art as engineering.
