Giant Road E+ 1 Pro Review: Takeaway

A full-powered electric road bike, the Giant Road E+ 1 Pro offers a great turn of speed over longer distances. It’ll help you tackle hills that previously defeated you thanks to the power of the SyncDrive Pro motor.

Ideal for...

Longer Rides in the Countryside
Keeping up with Kids on Family Rides
Longer Distance Commuting

E-Bike Overview

Many all-out road racing e-bikes have smaller motors and batteries for a little support on a longer ride. This definitely isn’t the case with the Road E+ 1 Pro. Packing a 500 Wh battery and up to 80 Nm of torque from its SyncDrive Pro motor, this e-bike is packed with power.

Thanks to the powerful motor, you can get pedal assist right up to 28 mph. That makes this a great long-distance commuting machine. If you’re planning more than 90 miles, choose the optional 250 Wh range extender that’ll give as many as 45 miles more.

Though it lacks a front suspension fork, Giant uses D-Fuse technology where the fork and handlebars flex naturally to absorb the bumps in the road. Other technologies include tubeless-ready tires that, once set up, can allow for almost puncture-free riding.

Very light as full-powered e-bikes go, the Road E+ 1 Pro is just 40 lbs. While this might be a little heavier than training road bikes with smaller motors and batteries, in this class of electric bikes, this is very competitive.

Reasons to Buy

If you’re older yet still want to go riding out with your club, the Road E+ 1 Pro can help you keep up with your pals. Or, if you want to commute a longer distance to work on a Class-3 electric bike, the Road E+ 1 Pro’s range should be more than enough. Another reason to grab this e-bike is if you may be on a slower recuperation from injury yet need to stay riding as you work your way back up to full strength.

The four different sizes of this bike fit riders from 5’3″ to 6’7″, meaning everyone can find their perfect fit.

Things to Consider

Even though you could use this e-bike for commuting or long-distance touring, the riding position and lack of rack/fenders would mean that you’re carrying your gear in a backpack. That could limit its use outside of leisure/club riding. Also, the Giant Contact SL saddle isn’t the most comfortable seat for an all-day ride. However, it’s simple enough to upgrade to a more padded variant.

Ratings

Power
5/5

The Giant/Yamaha SyncDrive Pro motor offers a peak of 80 Nm torque, which is among the best available for lightweight road racing electric bikes. It tops out at 28 mph, which is quick enough to power you on all but the craziest of ascents.

Its road tires will allow for quick acceleration, and the low position of the rider will help with the overall aerodynamics.

Range
5/5
5

Thanks to its low overall weight, the 500 Wh motor offers plenty of range. You should regularly get 60-70 miles per charge — very unlike other e-bike companies’ range claims that can be over-optimistic.

Range can be impacted by e-bike payload, weather conditions, and terrain. On a more mountainous route in a strong crosswind, you’ll get fewer miles per charge than on a flatter route with calmer weather conditions.

Comfort
5/5
5

As a road bike, the Giant Road E+ 1 Pro is a comfortable ride, but newbies may find the forward-leading, tucked position a little tiring to ride initially. The tight position might take some getting used to.

This e-bike is better suited to firm road surfaces thanks to its road tires and lack of a suspension fork. The low Q-factor motor allows your feet to be closer together while riding than larger motors. Over time, this can be better on your knees as your feet are perpendicular to them.

Durability
4.5/5
4.5

Using a front and rear Shimano Ultegra gear system, this e-bike has a complex drivetrain that’ll require a fair bit of maintenance as part of ownership. We recommend you get it serviced by an expert at least once a year, and more if you’re planning thousands of miles of use a year.

Giant offers a lifetime warranty on its frames, and the name-branded component parts are subject to one-year warranties.

Style
5/5
5

You’ll certainly look the part should you wear liveried lycra riding gear on this sleek-looking racing machine. The only color option on the Road E+ 1 Pro, however, is graphite black — could it be improved with a different color scheme? That’s for you to decide.
