Pedego Avenue Review: Takeaway

The Pedego Avenue is a powerful commuter e-bike thanks to its lightweight frame, elegant design, and trusty powertrain. This e-bike is practical for everyday use at an affordable price point of just under $2,000.

The Avenue is a great e-bike for those looking for the perfect balance between power and efficiency. With five levels of pedal assist, a top speed of 20 mph, and a range of approximately 30-60 miles depending on settings, it’s the ideal e-bike for commuting to work or cruising around on weekends.

Like many Pedego e-bikes, the Avenue comes with additional customization options to help riders tailor their product to their individual preferences. These include two wheel variations (spokes or magnesium), multiple frame colors, and two different frame types.

About the Pedego Avenue

The Avenue’s 500W motor delivers the perfect amount of power for an urban bike, meaning riders feel as though their journey is neither underpowered nor too heavy on the throttle.

Another key feature of the Avenue is its unique PedelSense software, which tracks the rider’s output and adds power throughout the ride. The twist throttle also provides full power override in each of the five levels of assistance, helping riders to feel in control at all times.

The detachable downtube-integrated battery blends in seamlessly with the Avenue’s frame and can be charged on or off the e-bike. Buyers also have the option of two battery sizes. The 48V/10.4AH battery is best for those who want to save money and weight. The 48V/14AH battery with premium li-ion cells is for riders who want to go further or apply the throttle more often.

Reasons to Buy

The Pedego Avenue is available in two frame types: classic or step-thru. This allows it to appeal to a wider range of rider heights, as shorter riders may find the step-thru frame option easier to mount and dismount.

The Avenue is lighter than other e-bikes, weighing in at just over 52 lbs (including engine and battery). This makes it easier to handle when putting it into your bike rack or pushing it up the stairs to your home.

Pedego also offers a five-year “no excuses” warranty, along with support from more than 200 dealerships around the nation. This is quite generous when compared to many other e-bike brands and offers buyers the ultimate peace of mind.

Things to Consider

The 48-volt 500-watt geared hub motor makes more buzzing and whirring noises than lower voltage systems and other alternative motors. This is particularly obvious while riding at full throttle.

Because they’re situated low on the frame, the locking cylinder and charging port are in the left crank arm’s path. This increases the risk of snagging as well as dust and water damage to these components.

Power

Thanks to its 500-watt rear-hub motor, the Pedego Avenue should get up to speed quickly from a standing start, both using throttle and pedal assist. Offering low rolling resistance, the tires will help with acceleration and help maintain a higher pace as you cruise.

For hills and on pedal assist mode, the seven-speed pedal drivetrain will enable economical riding and help flatten out the hills with the motor.

Range

The 48-volt battery — with options for both 10.4aH and 14aH — sits in the downtube of the frame. On throttle alone, you won’t get great mileage — expect something around 25 miles on the smaller battery and 35 miles on the larger one. On pedal assist, you should be able to get up to 35 miles on the smaller battery and 45 miles using the larger one. You’ll also get more range if you’re a lighter rider on easy terrain in ideal weather conditions.

While this should be a relatively inefficient hub motor electric bike because of the tiny battery, features like the narrow road tires with lower rolling resistance allow more power to be turned into speed.

Comfort
4/5
4

The Pedego Avenue keeps you in an upright, classic position. You’ll largely be using your upper body to steer the adjustable handlebars, so you won’t get too tired even after many miles. The narrow, 28” wheels will roll over bumps in the road without wearing out your arms, too.

With fixed forks, this e-bike won’t absorb all the bumps and lumps, and you may start to feel it if you’re cycling on an unpaved surface. You may also want to put on an aftermarket saddle, as the sports saddle could be a pain in the rump on a longer ride.

Though it’s possible to raise the handlebar and saddle heights, smaller or larger riders may not find this one-size-fits-all bike very comfortable.

Durability
4/5
4

One of the advantages of this being a rear-hub motor e-bike is that it’ll require a similar level of maintenance to that of a traditional bike. The motor should be good for five years, and the frame should outlast that considerably.

Maintenance involves oiling the 122-link chain and checking it for stretch every 750-1,000 miles. The brake pads and cables will require inspection at a similar distance.

Pedego offers a lifetime frame warranty and a five-year warranty for motors and other non-consumable parts like wheels.

Style

The classic version comes in three sober colors: Gunmetal Gray, Black, or Crocodile Green — colors that will blend into the background. We like the option of Mag wheels too which add a bit of funkiness to the bike.

The step-thru version comes with some louder colors — notably the Caribbean Blue or Wildberry Pink. You’ll certainly be noticed when you arrive and when you’re riding around! For those who aren’t into turning heads everywhere they go, you can choose the white or gray versions.
